The red bikini of Vida Samazai, who represented Afghanistan in the International Beauty Pageant
in 2003 (for the first time since 1972), has become one of the symbols, the flag of the struggle for а female freedom. Her courageous act angered the radicalized part of society and, at the same time, opened the way for the next generations of Afghan women. However, Sharia law, which quickly returned to Afghanistan after almost 20 years, leaves women with only two functions: housekeeping and childbearing. Afghan women again find themselves in a situation of complete material dependence and lack of the right to any choice – they cannot even leave the house unaccompanied by a man, otherwise they may be stoned.
